JLP took BIG pay CUT. PNP takes BIG pay HIKE and an army of HIGH paid Advisors. So much for the poor!

In April 2009 in solidarity with the harsh economic times then Prime Minister Bruce Golding took a 15% paycut in salary and Govt MPs took a 10% cut. Simpson-Miller refused to take any paycut and her Opposition members then took no cut in pay either. Further yet, Advisors under the Golding government got far lower salaries very few perks – i.e. Cars, First class travel, huge allowances etc. Many complained quietly as the salaries were just horrible. .

Since taking office the Portia Simpson-Miller led government took the highest salaries and took on an army of Advisors with super high salaries. Her cabinet is the largest and most expensive ever.So much for caring for the poor.

Cabinet 20 Members PLUS  8 State Ministers that is JA$200 million per annum.

Note Gleaner quote attributed to Simpson-Miller — “
After naming her 18-member shadow Cabinet in May last year, Simpson Miller said if she were in government, the number would not be that high.
“I did not announce an 18-member Cabinet. I’m not the Government,” she said when asked if that would be the size of her Cabinet.
She continued: “You would not have 18 … I would not be giving the country a breakfront,” she quipped.”

  1. The first government to reduce their salaries in this country was the Michael Manley government in January 1977. When they did that they were called communists by the JLP opposition led by Edward Seaga. The current salary f the prime minister is tied to the salary of the permanent secretary who receives one dollar less. The JLP government took a pay dip when the US economy was at its worst. Would they do it now? In any case. f my memory serves me correctly, the salaries went up back with the pay rise of the permanent secretaries making it six of one half dozen of the other.
